Common Core State Tests

What is the Common Core Standards Initiative (CCSI) ?

The CCSI is a common core of state standards in English-language arts and mathematics for grades K-12 developed by Governors and state commissioners of education from 48 states, 2 territories and the District of Columbia. It is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO).

Who is preparing the Standards?

$330 million in grants were awarded as part of the Race to the Top competition. The recipients are Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and the SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) in the amounts of approximately $170 and $160 million respectively.

PARCC STATES:

Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Tennessee, and District of Columiba.

PARCC states collectively educate about 22 million public K-12 students in the United States.

SMARTER Balanced Assessment States:

Alaska, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, US. Virgin Islands, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming.

Smarter Balanced member states educate more than 19 million of the nation’s public K to 12 students.

PARCC Releases New Sample Items --The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), a 19-state consortium working together to create next generation assessments, today released additional sample items for both English language arts/literacy and mathematics.
