CARBON MODULE

The following activities target a middle and high school population although some of the activities are approachable by more advanced elementary school students. The activities are also ideal for the general public to review basic concepts about carbon and carbon compounds.

The pages make extensive use of javascripts, and java applets making for a more interactive environment.

THE CARBON ATOM

Learn the basics of atomic structure of carbon and how to create a model of an atom.

CARBON MOLECULE

Learn about the 3 types of carbon: diamonds, graphite and fullerenes. Learn why carbon is is the building block to molecules of life.

CARBON THE ELEMENT Carbon the element.. location on Periodic Table and properties of the element carbon
GRAPHENE MOLECULE The Nobel Prize in Physics 2010 was awarded jointly to Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov "for groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene"

MORE ON THE FULLERENE

Cool Activity  This is the carbon molecule that has been making headlines in Nanotechnology and now the drug industry also has interests in it. What does it look like? How big is it? In this interactive activity you will measure the diameter of a fullerene molecule using JAVA MAGE , a molecular modeling java applet.

CARBON 3-D

Same module as 'carbon molecule', but images are generated using the molecular modeling plug-in chime. This allows molecules to be rotated and viewed in 3-D
CARBON FUELSWhat is Petroleum, Formation, Chemistry, Extraction...

SIMPLE CARBON COMPOUNDS

CARBON FULLERENE ACTIVITY PAGE Why is the fullerene and similar structures the cornerstone of nanotechnology? How big is a nanotube?JMOL APPLET--
CARBON MONOXIDEWhy is carbon monoxide so dangerous?JMOL APPLET--
CARBON STRUCTURES-- DIAMOND/GRAPHITEWhy is Graphite soft and Diamond hard if both are pure carbon? JMOL APPLET--
